Hi this post is so informative ! I just read your post on Social Media marketing and it reminded me of a post I wrote on the same subject at Social media measurement on marketing strategy. We could have a “latest” stream with posts ordered by creation date, a “hottest” stream with those posts with more likes in the last 24 hours, we could even implement a custom stream for each user based on logic like followers and interests, and it would still be a list of posts. It’s a matter of how to build these lists, but the reading performance remains unhindered. Once we acquire one of these lists, we issue a single query to Cosmos DB using the IN operator to obtain pages of posts at a time.

My daughter went on Omegle after seeing it used on a YouTube video – the video showed the chat was safe- a tween talking to two young kids. My daughter’s experience was much worse. Despite the numerous warnings on the initial page -she went right in and started to find people to chat with. She smartly had her camera off -but found no one would chat with her. So she turned it on – showing only below her neck. Sure enough – someone started chatting to her. He (using typing only) asked her to stand up and turn around – she did that – and he promptly threatened her -” I have taken a photo of your butt (she was fully clothed) and your face (not sure if that was possible) and I will put them onto social media and will embarrass you if you don’t do what I say…” she promptly shut it down and came down in tears. We alerted the local police and reported the incident -which they fully supported. This is NOT a site for anyone but ADULTS. Despite many warnings and much education about this type of site – my daughter ignored everything for the chance of chatting and feeling that ‘she belonged and was popular’. Such a hard thing to parent around.

In the book Networked – The New Social Operating System by Lee Rainie and Barry Wellman, the two authors reflect on mainly positive effects of social media and other Internet-based social networks. According to the authors, social media are used to document memories, learn about and explore things, advertise oneself and form friendships as well as the growth of ideas from the creation of blogs, podcasts, videos and gaming sites.[174] For instance, they claim that the communication through Internet based services can be done more privately than in real life. Furthermore, Rainie and Wellman discuss that everybody has the possibility to become a content creator. Content creation provides networked individuals opportunities to reach wider audiences. Moreover, it can positively affect their social standing and gain political support. This can lead to influence on issues that are important for someone. As a concrete example of the positive effects of social media, the authors use the Tunisian revolution in 2011, where people used Facebook to gather meetings, protest actions, etc.[88] Rainie and Wellman (Ibid) also discuss that content creation is a voluntary and participatory act. What is important is that networked individuals create, edit, and manage content in collaboration with other networked individuals. This way they contribute in expanding knowledge. Wikis are examples of collaborative content creation.

It’s unclear whether this app is really going to catch on or not. It certainly made a ripple in the news when it launched, but with so many other social networks out there already, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this one struggle to make its mark. Peach gives users a very simple way to share posts with friends using photos, looping videos, text-based messages, links, GIFs, the weather, your location and more. There are also other little fun features for users to enjoy, like playing a game of “Peachball” or drawing doodles. Time will only tell whether this will be one to gain any traction among the bigger social networks. More »

Social media can be a useful source of market information and a way to hear customer perspectives. Blogs, content communities, and forums are platforms where individuals share their reviews and recommendations of brands, products, and services. Businesses are able to tap and analyze the customer voices and feedback generated in social media for marketing purposes;[15] in this sense the social media is a relatively inexpensive source of market intelligence which can be by marketers and managers to track and respond to consumer-identified problems and detect market opportunities. For example, the Internet erupted with videos and pictures of iPhone 6 “bend test” which showed that the coveted phone could be bent by hand pressure. The so-called “bend gate” controversy[16] created confusion amongst customers who had waited months for the launch of the latest rendition of the iPhone. However, Apple promptly issued a statement saying that the problem was extremely rare and that the company had taken several steps to make the mobile device’s case stronger and robust. Unlike traditional market research methods such as surveys, focus groups, and data mining which are time-consuming and costly, and which take weeks or even months to analyze, marketers can use social media to obtain ‘live’ or “real time” information about consumer behavior and viewpoints on a company’s brand or products. This can be useful in the highly dynamic, competitive, fast-paced and global marketplace of the 2010s.

Hi there — Thank you so much for your comments! Our review doesn’t say you have to use real names, only that you can (which is not recommended by us). Regarding Oink, it’s one of many mini apps created by Kik Messenger; we chose to call it out but weren’t implying that it is the only one — and you’re right, lots of Kik’s mini apps aren’t regulated as they’re created by independent developers. It’s a challenging app to safely navigate, so your concern is right on target.

Privacy rights advocates warn users on social media about the collection of their personal data. Some information is captured without the user’s knowledge or consent through electronic tracking and third party applications. Data may also be collected for law enforcement and governmental purposes,[117] by social media intelligence using data mining techniques.[118] Data and information may also be collected for third party use. When information is shared on social media, that information is no longer private. There have been many cases in which young persons especially, share personal information, which can attract predators. Teens especially share significantly more information on the internet now than they have in the past. Teen are much more likely to share their personal information, such as email address, phone number, and school names.[120] Studies suggest that teens are not aware of what they are posting and how much of that information can be accessed by third parties.
